Thursday Message from the ChairsThu 16 Mar 2023

We hope you are as excited as we are for the start of SIGCSE TS 2023! Today we start off at the Opening Plenary with our amazing Opening Keynote Speaker, Dr. Robert Thirsk, on the Currency-of-Trade for an Astronaut.

If you’re having trouble seeing the latest content and agenda updates on the platform phone app, try hitting the refresh button at the top right. This should update the information and ensure you have the most up-to-date content and agenda information.

[All times in this email are North American Eastern Time (ET)].

The online SIGCSE board office hours have shifted:

Participating In-Person at the Metro Toronto Convention Center

  • The symposium kicks off at 8:15 am. We are offering coffee, tea, and hot chocolate before the plenary each day, so be sure to head over outside Exhibit Hall F on the 800 level a bit early to grab a hot drink before the plenary kicks off.

  • Gently shared Wi-Fi means everyone actually gets to use Wi-Fi! Please be considerate by not downloading/uploading videos or other large quantities of data unnecessarily. The SSID is SIGCSE and the password is sigcse2023.

  • We have water coolers in all rooms and on all floors for your convenience. However, please note that they may not be immediately visible, so feel free to ask for assistance in locating them.

  • If this is your first time at SIGCSE TS, welcome! Today is the First Timer’s Lunch at 12:00 - 13:45 in Exhibit Hall F. 2023 SIGCSE Award recipient for Lifetime Service to the Computer Science Education Community Dr. Renée McCauley will be speaking about “A Culture of Service and Community”. Please note that this is a ticketed event which is currently sold out.

  • Today is also the symposium reception in the 700 Level Pre-Function Space, 19:30 - 21:30. It would be amazing to see you all there!

Don’t forget to pick up a sticker or button to show your comfort when interacting with others at the conference.

We hope you enjoy building your schedule and have your day pretty well planned. We couldn’t run this event without our supporters. Please consider attending one of our supporter events while you are here. The Thursday Supporter Events can be found on the website program if you filter by SIGCSE supporter sessions.

Participating Online in Webex

  • To access the Opening Plenary with keynote speaker Dr. Robert Thirsk, click on the agenda item on Webex. If you want to ask a question, use the chat in Webex.

  • The SIGCSE Coffee Break Show hosted by Mark Sherriff will be streaming live to Youtube from the exhibit hall floor during the coffee breaks! If you miss the live show, you can catch it later on YouTube: http://sigcsecoffeebreak.org

  • Come join us in the Online Authors’ Corner at 10:45 am or 3:45 pm today! Find the authors of many different papers in Authors’ Corner and discuss their latest work.

  • The First-timer’s lunch is a hybrid event. Grab your lunch and stream it through the Webex platform. If you would like to watch the stream with other online attendees, from a computer, join one of the online hangout rooms to have an online table of new friends. To make sure you don’t miss anything, we recommend that you open the online hangout rooms in a second tab/window and pick a room with others already in it.

  • Attending online or skipping the in-person sessions? You can still learn about the papers! On the Webex platform, you can access the pre-recorded videos from the URLs in the agenda items. Please note that the URLs in the agenda items to the pre-recorded videos do not work on the Webex phone app. You can still find all of the pre-recorded videos on your phone in the “Pre-Recorded Videos” tab.

  • The SIGCSE reception is tonight! If you would like to connect with other attendees online, join one of the online hangout rooms to have an online table of new friends.

If you want to connect with one of the members of the hybrid committee, come to the Cabbagetown Online Hangout Room during any of the breaks!

If you see something that needs to be fixed, please fill out the issues notification form.
