An Integrated Approach to Data Science Foundations in Computing, Mathematics and StatisticsIn-Person
Data science is revolutionizing science and industries. There is a consensus to introduce data science to secondary schools. Due to the high interdisciplinary nature of data science, one challenge is how to best teach data science foundations in computing, mathematics and statistics. We discover that ideas of mathematical logic unifies these foundations and make them a whole in students’ learning experience. As a result, we propose a mathematical logic based framework to integrate these foundations. To study the feasibility of the framework, we developed a %25-hour 8-week module for high school students and implemented it in three computer science classes with 53 students in a public high school. The pre- and post-tests show positive impact on students’ learning of computing and statistics. Our semi-structured group interviews also reveal that the integrated approach is acceptable overall.
