Improving Student Success through Early Industry Mentorship In-Person
Computer Science (CS) students graduate with various levels of preparedness and experience in the working world. While the CS curriculum teaches concepts, programming, and more – it does not often directly teach students how to translate that into assets that will benefit them in their professional lives. How do students know and learn why they should get internships, create an online professional presence in places like GitHub, or even craft a compelling resume? In this paper, we present preliminary findings from a pilot project to pair students in CS1 or CS2 classes with industry mentors, with the goal of increasing internship placement and ultimately improving student success and graduation rates.
We found a positive response from the mentors and mentees that participated. In future work, we will report on rates of securing internships for Summer 2023 compared to those that did not participate, as well as findings from repeated implementations.
