RAVIC: Runtime Analysis Visualizer for Introductory CoursesIn-Person
As the demand for competent Computer Science (CS) professionals increases, CS departments are forced to contend with surges in prospective CS majors and high failure rates among students. This has created a growing need for innovative teaching tools to reinforce a novice student’s understanding of difficult concepts in CS education. Tracing code and computing the running time of loops are essential skills that many students struggle to develop early into their CS curriculum. Several tools have been developed to assist students with runtime analysis, such as AAV and the Compigorithm. However, most tools work on the assumption that students have some foundational knowledge of the concepts. A tool that teaches students how to compute runtimes at a introductory level has yet to reach classrooms. An effective runtime analysis visualization system for introductory courses must depict the tracing and approximation of the sum. We propose a design in which the iterations of loops are represented as rows in a table and the columns represent the loop variables within the said loop, with the last column representing the time complexity of the loop body. Then, in the summation stage, it iterates through the partial sums starting from the rightmost column and adds all operations until it reaches the leftmost column. The student will also have access to controls which will give them more agency over their learning experience.
